Salma Bozeye

Growing up watching the women in her village making baskets, Salma Bozeye, founder and director of Bait Al Turath, has continued their legacy by weaving baskets professionally for over 16 years. With the increased pace in today’s lifestyle and a decline in such crafts, Salma has made it her goal to continue the tradition of basket-weaving through younger generations. All of the materials she uses to make these baskets are locally sourced from the women in the Salfit region of the West Bank, Palestine. Each basket is carefully crafted by Salma with olive and wheat straw in traditional Palestinian techniques and shapes

Salma has expanded her business to hosting training programs to teach others in the community how to make these one-of-a-kind baskets. More women gaining the creative and technical skills to make and sell these products allows for more opportunities for women to provide an income and empowerment. These baskets are primarily only available in the West Bank region of Palestine, but with a wider market of customers, comes an increased investment in Palestinian women’s economy.  Salma, along with her colleagues, represent women’s crucial role in preserving age-old traditions and celebrating Palestinian culture.

“These orders have been a tremendous help, and thanks to God, I have been able to support my girls in pursuing higher education. One is studying nursing, one is studying English literature, and the other is studying plastic arts. I hope continue supporting the education of the rest of my children at the university.”

“I am extremely happy with MECA project, and I hope it remains sustainable, as it is very helpful. During these circumstances we are going through, this craft has become our main source of income, benefiting both our household and our children.”
